In China, they were used to (and in some areas do) punish thieves by locking them in a vertical contraption that looks like a wooden neck inventory on four extended stilts, like a very small table with a hole inside sitting about six foot long legs. The contraption locks making them choke to death or need to stand on their tip feet.
